The De Mond Nature Reserve is situated at the mouth of the Heuningnes River, forming an estuary between Arniston and Struisbaai, 26 km south-east of Bredasdorp on the south-western Cape coast.

It is especially noted for bird watching, for example, sea birds like the Damara and Caspian Terns, and small mammals like the Grysbok, Steenbok and Grey Duiker.

For hikers there is the 7km Sterna Trail, which follows the river and sand dunes.

Day visitors can enjoy a picnic under the milkwood trees on the river bank or collect shells along the pristine beach. It´s a well-loved spot for anglers who fish along the coast or in the estuary for grunter and cob.
