elimElim is a Moravian Mission Station founded in 1824. Small cottages and a substantial church were built to house the community and the missionaries also taught people various trades and skills, one being roof thatching, which is still a thriving industry today. The ENTIRE village is a national monument.

The watermill built in 1828 and later restored, has the largest wooden water wheel in South Africa, and is again grinding wheat.

There is also a memorial which commemorates the liberation of slaves in the Cape in 1838.
